Can you tell what’s wrong with this picture? It may look like the most famous fashion photograph ever taken, but in fact, it’s not. If it weren’t for a spontaneous moment between photographer Herb Ritts and his subjects that day, the legendary shot that ensued might have never acquired the iconic status it still holds today.

Of course, what’s missing from the previous photograph (which we featured in our recent interview with Tatjana Patitz) is supermodel Christy Turlington, one of the iconic five. But why was Turlington almost not included in the shot?

As TIME reports,

The long and legendary supermodel era of the ’90s can be summed up in one gorgeous and distinct photograph: Herb Ritts’ now-iconic shot of Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz and Stephanie Seymour huddled together in the nude. But the 1989 sitting almost didn’t happen.

As Campbell recalls, Turlington was on a Calvin Klein contract and reportedly wasn’t allowed to participate. “We said, ‘How can you not be in this picture?’” Campbell says. “And she jumped in, and that was it!”
